Metabolism is a process by which your body converts whatever you consume into energy. A slow metabolism leads to weight gain. However, indulging in any physical activity could lead to increase in metabolism which burns calories.

Mickey Mehta, holistic health guru, avers “A good BMR keeps you youthful always. With age, your metabolism slows down and gets sluggish, so it’s very important to rev up your metabolism. One should start exercising, increase highly nutritive food intake and increase the intake of sunlight, rest and luxuries like a massage, aromatherapy or sitting in a hot tub. Also, recreational activities like games and sports will keep the BMR up. It helps in absorbing nutrients, plus the rate of cellular regeneration and toxin elimination improves.”

Here are few ways to increase your metabolism:

Fibre Factor

Add fruits and veggies to your meals. Due to their high-fiber content, it takes more energy to digest. Thereby the act of chewing foods like fruits, vegetables and whole grains can increase your calorie burn by up to 30% while you’re digesting them.

Cuppa Caffeine

Many of us like starting our day with a cup of coffee and if you are one of those who do, you have already taken a step to boost your metabolic rate. Caffeine stimulates the nervous system which sends signals to fat cells asking them to break down.

Protein Power

Protein has a high thermic effect so your body will burn more calories to digest it. Including a lean protein source such as low-fat cheese, beans, chicken, fish etc is a great way to rev up your metabolism and keep you feeling energized and fueled all day long.

Quick Set

Before you dig into your meal, get on the floor and do approximately 20 to 50 push-ups (depending on your weight and strength level). A quick set can lead to an afterburn of about 200 calories.

Sip It!

Catechins, antioxidants present in green tea, raise metabolism by 4%. Green tea also prevents viral infections and reduces risk of cancer. However, if green tea doesn’t suit you, you could sip on water at regular intervals during the day to avoid dehydration, which can slow down your metabolism.

Bust Stress

Make sure you take regular breaks from your busy schedule. Stress could slow down your metabolism rate and lead to munching on fatty foods. De-stress by listening to your favourite tunes while walking briskly or indulging in other fun activities.

Wine Wonder

A few sips of red wine could raise your metabolic rate for 95 minutes. A recent study found that women who raise a glass regularly are seven to eight pounds lighter.
